Emergency Locksmith Service in Rhode Island
Locked Out in Rhode Island Right Now
When to Call an Emergency Locksmith in Rhode Island
If you are standing outside a locked door right now, the useful thing to know is that most emergency calls do not end with a destroyed door or a drilled lock. Top Lock and Garage runs emergency locksmith work across Rhode Island, from Providence and Pawtucket through Warwick, Cranston and East Greenwich down into South County and Newport County. House and apartment lockouts, office lockouts, car lockouts, keys snapped off inside a cylinder, lost keys with no spare left, doors that will not lock at closing time and garage doors that cannot be shut are all calls we take.
What Counts as a Locksmith Emergency
Not everything that feels urgent is an emergency, and knowing the difference saves you money. A door that will not lock at all, a key broken off in the cylinder, a last key lost, a forced entry, and a garage door that will not close are genuine emergencies, because the property is either unusable or unsecured until somebody fixes it. A worn key that still turns, a deadbolt that sticks in damp weather, or a rekey after a closing are ordinary bookings that do not need an out-of-hours visit. When you describe what has happened we will tell you which of the two you have, rather than treating everything as urgent.

The emergency work we cover across the state:
What to Do While You Wait, and What Not to Do
There are a few things worth doing while you wait, and one or two worth avoiding. Check every other door and window that is safe to check, because a fair number of lockouts end quietly at an unlocked back door. If a key has snapped, leave the broken half exactly where it is; a stub that is still seated is far easier to extract than one that has been pushed deeper in. Do not lever an aluminium or composite door with a screwdriver and do not try to card a deadbolt, because both tend to turn a lockout into a lock replacement. If there has been a break-in, call the police first and photograph the damage before anything is moved or tidied.
House Lockouts, and Why the Door Usually Survives
Most house lockouts in Rhode Island end with the lock intact. A standard pin-tumbler cylinder can usually be picked or bypassed, and on a residential door that is the first thing we try, because it costs you nothing beyond the visit. Drilling is a last resort and it is reserved for cylinders that are already damaged, high-security cylinders that resist bypass, or situations where a broken key has jammed the plug. If we do have to drill, we carry replacement cylinders, so you are not left with an open hole in the door while a part is ordered.
Apartment and triple-decker lockouts carry an extra step. We ask for proof that the address is yours before we open anything, and that is not a formality we are willing to skip, whatever the hour. A lease, a piece of mail, a licence with the address, or a landlord or property manager on the phone all work. Commercial lockouts are the same: the person asking has to be the person entitled to ask. It occasionally slows a call down by a few minutes and it is the single most important thing an emergency locksmith does.
Car lockouts split into two jobs that people often confuse. If the key is inside the car and still exists, the work is entry: getting the door open without damaging the weather seal, the glass or the electronics in the door card. If the key is gone entirely, the work is a replacement key originated from the vehicle rather than copied, which needs the right equipment on the van and proof that the car is yours. Our guide to making a key without the original explains what that involves and why it is not the same as a copy.
Car Lockouts and Lost Keys After Hours
The after-hours version of the car job is the harder one, because dealers are shut and a tow to a dealer usually means waiting until morning anyway. Working at the vehicle avoids that, whether it is parked on a street in Providence, in a lot in Warwick or at a beach in South County. What we need from you is the make, model and year, and whether any key at all still exists.
If you are locked out now, call and describe the door or the vehicle and whether any key still exists. If it is not urgent, the contact form is the better route and we will come back to you with what the visit involves.

Emergency Locksmith Questions We Are Asked in Rhode Island
Will you have to drill my lock to get me back in?
Usually not. On a standard residential cylinder we try non-destructive entry first, and drilling is kept for damaged cylinders, high-security cylinders that resist bypass, or a key jammed in the plug. If drilling is needed we carry replacement cylinders so the door is secure before we leave.
Do you ask for proof of address before opening a door?
Yes, every time, including out of hours. A lease, addressed mail, a licence or a landlord on the phone are all fine. It is the single most important check an emergency locksmith makes and we do not skip it.
Can you make a car key at night if I have lost the only one?
Yes. The replacement is originated from the vehicle rather than copied, so it happens where the car is parked rather than at a dealer. We need the make, model and year, and proof the vehicle is yours.
Is a garage door that will not close an emergency?
We treat it as one, because the garage and often the house beyond it are open. Snapped springs, failed cables and off-track doors are the usual causes, and in most cases the door can be secured on the same visit.
